Why We Left Social Media

“What is really worth our investment of time, energy, and money?” - Virginia Rosenberg

The question above, so simple yet so potent, is a major theme we're bringing into 2022.

For the past few years, we've felt a growing ambivalence about social media and our presence there. We stopped using Facebook in 2021, and it felt great. Our next step was to let go of Instagram, rendering us completely inactive on social media. It was hard to let go on so many levels, but it was undoubtedly the right decision.

Why did we make this choice? Our reasons are both personal and professional.

The personal reasons: We finally feel ready to work through our social media addictions, which are directly connected to our phone addictions. When we get really honest, we know that our current social media habits are not serving our growth, our relationships, or our happiness. We've also found that the less time we spend on social media, the better we feel and the more fully we show up in our three-dimensional lives.

The professional reasons: The Spring’s mission is to help you optimize your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Although we acknowledge that there's a lot of great content on social media, we also acknowledge that it can be unhealthy, addicting, and more harmful than helpful.

We believe that all of the great stuff on social media can be found elsewhere, in formats like podcasts, books, and live experiences. When we consume content with intention, rather than quickly viewing it mid-scroll without fully digesting it (let alone integrating it), everyone benefits.

By moving our content off of social media and onto less-addicting platforms, we aim to operate in alignment with our beliefs and help you spend less time on social media too, if you so choose.

So, you may be wondering:

How do we stay in touch with our community?

One of our goals in leaving social media is to create more space for real-time, meaningful connection and richer content. We stay connected with Vedic meditators at our online Group Meditation sessions and other live classes. We also write a weekly newsletter for Vedic meditators, designed to support you in your practice and your life (subscribe at the bottom of this page). We are deeply committed to sending thoughtful emails that are worth opening!

Is this a social media break, or goodbye forever?

We're not sure. Like most of what we do at The Spring, this is an experiment — and a decision made through a long process of observing, reflecting inward, and choosing what feels most aligned with our values. We don't know what the future holds, but we're confident that making the most aligned choice now will lead us to the next right step, and then the next... just like in all areas of life.

We hope that by stepping away from social media, we can inspire and support those of you who wish to do the same, while showing up more fully to further our mission.

Here’s to a future of deeper connection!

With love, Arden and Rick
