Want to Feel at Peace With Your Life?
by Arden Martin
If you’ve learned Vedic Meditation, you know that the benefits are often felt immediately. Meditation helps induce a state of deep physiological rest, so we tend to feel more refreshed and energized right after a session.
But what about the bigger-picture benefits of the practice? When it comes understanding life itself, how can meditation help shift our perspective for the better?
Consider this: When something happens in your life, do you see it as happening to you, happening for you, or simply happening as a part of the greater evolutionary process? Perhaps you can relate to all three of these viewpoints. But with a consistent meditation practice, you may find yourself feeling more at peace with whatever is happening in your life and the world at large.
Imagine having a telescope that allows you to see yourself and your life among everything else in the universe. Vedic Meditation helps us zoom in and out with greater ease, giving us an expanded perspective on our lives and the role we play: Rather than feeling paralyzed by how a particular situation is affecting us on an individual level, we’re able to consider how it could be relevant on a collective level. Rather than feeling stuck in a painful state, we’re able to recognize its fleeting nature and stop resisting it so much.
The more we meditate, the more we begin to identify with the part of ourselves that is universal, rather than identifying solely as individuals. In turn, we begin to see the events and circumstances of our lives as part of a bigger picture. Evolution is always in motion, and our experiences are never separate from that. Even the life events that don’t align with our preferences are leading us to the next step on our evolutionary path. Have you ever looked back on your life and thought, “It all makes sense now”? Meditation helps us remember this as life is happening, not just retrospectively.
To be clear, meditation is not a magic wand that makes all suffering go away. If you’re a daily meditator and still find yourself struggling to accept something about your life or the state of the world, there’s nothing wrong with you. Throughout history, humans have been on a quest to make peace with what is, and there is no perfect way do so.
However, meditation is powerful tool for expanding our perspective: on ourselves and how we fit into the world, on the world and how it fits into totality, and the relevance of everything that happens during our brief and precious time in these human bodies. Life is meant to be imperfect and nonlinear, and a meditation practice helps us make peace with that.
